Small Town; Big Character ~ Brattleboro, Vermont

Are you wondering what to do this Spring Break? How about taking the kids to a town not too far from your own house and do some exploring? I love exploring new towns and places, and especially ones with big character like Brattleboro, Vermont. My daughter had a gymnastics meet this weekend in Brattleboro, a small town in Vermont just over the border from Massachusetts. After the meet we decided to go downtown and check things out. It was such a small, quaint mountain mill town. There were shops along the Main Street. They had outdoor-wear stores, coffee shops, used bookstores, sports stores, restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, and much more.  Vermont definitely has its own  feel, and I love it!

The hilly streets and brick buildings added character to the town, along with the mountainous background and bridges over the river. I also saw Bed & Breakfast places close-by. This would be a great little getaway from the suburbs and city. It reminds me a lot like Eureka Springs, AR and Nevada City, CA. Both are quaint little mountain towns with shops and restaurants.
Brattleboro is still recovering from the floods caused by Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011. Some shops have flood pictures and recovery and renovation shots as well placed in their windows. As we live only 2 1/2 hours from here in Rhode Island, I’m sure we will be back again.
What is your favorite quaint town to visit?
